Bloco do Sol

 

Bloco do Sol San José is directed by Jimmy Biala and Yuko Tamura. The group is based at the School of Arts and Culture in San José, California.The ensemble is focused on their development of samba percussion and dance from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They have performed at the San Jose Jazz SummerFest, the Cinequest Film Festival, the Silicon Valley Pride Festival and the 2021 San Jose City Dance Concert.

Based in San Jose, California we are a team with members of different age groups, ethnicities and backgrounds. We are founded on the ideas of self- discipline, youth empowerment, respect and appreciation for Vietnamese/Chinese culture. Buu Kim Tu, is a non-profit organization under the Cultural Quest Foundation.

Calpulli Tonalehqueh

 

Calpulli Tonalehqueh is an Aztec Dance Group based on the foundation of wisdom, harmony, and culture. Wisdom involves seeking, obtaining, sharing indigenous knowledge and traditions. Harmony involves striving for harmony with self, mother earth, the creator, and others. Culture refers to walking the Red Road, which includes: native arts, cultural productions, and a native worldview.

In November of 2015, Arturo Magaña founded Ensamble Folclórico Colibrí, which as of 2020, was the first ever LBTQ Folklorico Academy. Arturo has toured with Linda Ronstadt throughout his career, and performed at various renowned festivals and with popular recording artists.

Bay Area legend, Ann Woo, had spent her whole life demonstrating her passion for arts and culture, and had provided a platform to bring diverse ethnic cultural activities into America’s mainstream society. To accomplish her mission, she taught us through the years to provide the best support to the artists, enabling them to fully develop and contribute their talent, work in solidarity with other culture organizations to bring diverse ethnic cultures into the mainstream, and contribute to the common good, without self-agenda.

LaToya Fernandez

 

Educator, Activist, and Community Leader, LaToya Fernandez, dedicates her career to teaching students equity and justice. As a Restorative Justice Coordinator, LaToya has served in local San Jose schools supporting students, educators and families through cultural responsiveness, restorative practices and community engagement.

Opera Cultura

 

Our mission is to explore the Latinx-Hispanic cultural experience through music theater and opera, while providing opportunities for the community to participate as creators, learners, and performers. We accomplish this by presenting the work of composer Héctor Armienta and other Latinx-Hispanic composers, showcasing exceptional artists, and training young people in the performing arts. By doing so, we create a cultural bridge between communities.

Parangal’s mission is to give tribute to Philippine heritage by preserving and promoting ethnic attire, music, and dance through research, workshops, and performances. Parangal aims to serve as a bridge, inspiring and connecting Filipinos in diaspora to their roots to give them a sense of pride and identity, while educating diverse communities to foster awareness and appreciation of Philippine arts and culture.

Playboyz Inc. is a multi-generational, world-renowned strutting and popping crew that was established in 1981 in East San Jose, making it one of the oldest active dance crews in the Bay Area. In its beginning, Playboyz founder Robert Sabala recruited then 12-year-old Bryan Moreno (a.k.a. Money B) to join the new crew, their distinct flavor of strutting an extension of their Chicano culture. Since then, Playboyz has traveled the world to teach workshops and masterclasses, and to judge and compete in dance competitions. They are featured in the short documentary, “If Cities Could Dance | San Jose” by KQED.

Journey to the world of Portuguese Fado as interpreted by Ramana Vieira, a northern California native of Portuguese descent. Vieira’s work captures traditional Fado and influences from the Portuguese diaspora in a musical tapestry that ranges from the whispering, haunting ballads of Fado, to American classics and jazzy blues.

Dubbed “The Rockstar of the Flute” by the Informador de Guadalajara (Mexico), Mexican-Japanese American flutist Ray Furuta has performed worldwide as a commanding and versatile performing artist within the classical, contemporary, world, jazz, and pop sectors.

Robert Howard

 

A native of Atlanta, GA, Robert began studying cello at age 12. Graduate of Rice University and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Robert runs his own house concert series, concertsbythesquare.org which combine thematically linked chamber music programs with food and short lecture presentations.

Farima Berenji’s training and experience with the Farima Dance Company, inspired her to begin a worldwide collaboration with other traditional dancers and musicians in the Simorgh Dance Collective, a world community of expert and emerging artists devoted to cross-cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration in traditional, classical, and sacred dance styles of the Silk Road.

Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble

 
Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble is one of the performing arts groups of the San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild. Tabia, based in San Jose, and is in its thirty-seventh season of performances in the Bay Area. The name Tabia, is a Swahili word for “talented.” Under the direction of Artistic Director Viera Whye, the Ensemble has earned a reputation for presenting high quality productions and programs that celebrate and explore the African-American/African Ancestry experience ranging from touching dramas to clever comedies, and community cultural programs presenting poetry, storytelling, song, drumming, and dance.

Mosaic Fellow Srividya Eashwar founded Xpressions in 2002 with an idea to promote the beautiful traditions of Indian Folk Dances. Xpressions mission is to develop, promote and sustain ethnic dance practices from India and around the world and to serve as a cultural resource to engage and enrich the community.
